The Boon of the Doll-Laithibigee Bor

Once upon a time there lived a beautiful girl with her father in the kingdom of a well known King. Her father was the Achanba Manai(King’s favourite servant) and her marriage was fixed with the king’s son.
The girl had a doll from her childhood days which was her only friend. She loves her doll dearly and took good care of it. The doll also loves the girl and they were so close that they often talk to each other. When the time of the girl’s marriage with the King’s son arrived the two friends became very sad and they cried together the whole night. The doll said to her “ Ita nungshibi( My dear friend) we will be departed soon, all these years we have shared everything and you have always been a good friend to me.
Since you are going to start a new life from tomorrow, I will grant you two wishes. The first one will make you understand everything, even the birds and animals languages and the second wish will make you see everything what others cannot. Live happily and well with these powers my friend”.
The girl got married with the King’s son. The marriage was a grand event and everyone was invited to bless the newly wed. And so the girl began to live happily in the Palace. But after some days the King died suddenly. The cremation of the King took place in the Royal tradition, everyone including the King’s relatives, King’s official and all the servants attended the ceremony. Everyone present were crying and mourning when the King’s body was set on flame, except for her daughter-in law who kept starting at the dead body of the King. She started laughing out loud amidst the crowd without showing even a single scene of sadness. The people present were talking and gossiping on her strange behaviour. The King’s son was also seeing her wife laughing and behaving oddly and he thought what was wrong with her. The cremation ended after sometime and everyone left the spot.
Days later, the Head Minister of the King’s court died as well. Many people including the King’s son and his daughter-in law also attended the cremation ceremony. Suddenly the girl started crying out with a broken heart, she kept on weeping looking at the dead body of the Head Minister. The King’s son was furious at such behaviour of his wife and out of anger he brought his wife to her father’s place and said, “Your daughter is manner less and worth less.” “How dare she laughed at my father’s death and cried at the death of the Head Minister?” “I think you have not taught her any manners and moral values of life.” ‘I am leaving your daughter in your hands now.’ So saying the King’s son rode away in his horse.

The Achanba Manai felt humiliated at the King’s son attitude and started scolding his daughter for insulting him. To this his daughter replied, “Father, What am I supposed to do?” ‘During the cremation of my father –in law his five souls came out from his dead body and they started to kick him again and again saying, You awfully bad person! We were suffering inside your dirty body for this long, You are a selfish person who doesn’t want to give anything to people. It’s good that we are free now.” Looking at this funny scene really made me laugh and I couldn’t control myself and laughed out...”And at the cremation of the Head Minister, his five souls were crying while separating from his body saying, ‘You kind, faithful and honest body, it is really hard for us to depart from you!’ listening to their words I felt sorry and cried out.’ “Is it my fault that I was able to see and hear all these things?”
She later narrated the story of the boon and about the doll to his father and her husband. The King’s son could not fully believe to what his wife was telling and he was still having doubt on her. In the meantime, a crow said something from the branch of a tree. Hearing it the girl said, “Look that crow just said that there’s a dead man floating in the part of our river and he has a diamond ring in his hand.” “If the King’s son remove the ring and keep it well, it will bring luck and good fortune to our kingdom.”
And they all headed to the part of the river and there they found the dead man with a diamond ring in his hand. The King’s son then believed that his wife was telling the truth and she was correct. He asked her for forgiveness and the girl said, “I already have dear!” So they went back to the palace and lived happily with prosperity and peace.
